The other day I was covering a press conference at City Hall. While waiting for the press conference to start, I spoke with a man who was standing on the steps in front of the building. It turns out that he was Victor Mooney, the man behind the Goree Challenge, an attempt to row across the Atlantic from Africa to Brooklyn. Victor’s mission is to use his epic row to raise AIDS awareness. He plans to leave from Senegal on December 1 (World AIDS Day) for his third attempt to cross the ocean. His first attempt was in a homemade boat that sank five hours after it was launched. His second attempt ended when his electrical system couldn’t produce enough juice to run his desalinator, leaving him without fresh drinking water.
Let’s hope the third time is a charm. Here’s to Victor!
