The New York City Department of Transportation maintains a Web site devoted to the city’s 25 movable bridges. (There are actually more than 25 movable bridges in New York City, but they are not all owned and operated by the Department of Transportation. The Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, for example, is owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.)
Federal law requires that most of these bridges have an operator on site 24/7. In 2008 we made it our goal to pass under each of the city’s movable bridges, whether in Puffin or in some other vessel. In many instances it is not necessary for the bridge to open to allow us passage, but we also decided to get as many bridges as possible to open for us.
The reports from previous excursions and other assorted posts can be read here.
Hiiiiiii papi this blog is soooooooooooo cooolllllllll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never knew this about NYC. Very interesting. I have some grea photos of the Brooklyn Bridge from my running days. My wife and I maintain thecutbridge.com here in Gloucester. It’s our own “moveable bridge”.
Just saw your folks interviewed here in Gloucester on goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/ . Glad they made it here safe and sound. It’s a great place to live. Maybe see you around town sometime when you visit.
Kenny, I wrote about your bridge here: https://amovablebridge.wordpress.com/2009/10/07/gloucester-revisited/
And I even linked to your webcam page!
Thanks. Dont’ know why I never saw the ping back.
